The Shell Puget Sound Refinery is located on March Point in Anacortes, Washington, which extends into Fidalgo Bay to the west and Padilla Bay to the east. The Puget Sound Refinery is a major receiving point for Alaskan North Slope and Canadian Crude Oil.
The Puget Sound Refining Company\'s oil refinery was founded as a Texaco facility in 1958. The facility went on stream in September 1958, processing up to 45,000 barrels of crude oil per day. It was in 1998 when Equilon Enterprises was formed in a merger between Shell and Texaco and the refinery became known as the Equilon Puget Sound Refining Company. As of January of 2002, the plant continues to operate as the Shell Puget Sound Refinery.
Currently, the plant processes as much as 145,000 barrels (5.7 million gallons) of crude oil per day. When refinery first began operating, most of its crude oil came from Canada via pipeline. Although it continues to receive crude from Central and Western Canada, now much of the facility\'s feedstock arrives by tanker from oilfields on Alaska\'s North Slope. The processed crude oil from this computerized refinery is used to manufacture gasoline and jet fuel, to prepare diesel fuel and propane and for the production of petroleum coke and sulfur.
The plant has made safety, health and environmental protection high priority especially after a fire in 1998 occurred when a delayed coking unit was restarted after a major storm cut. The Puget Sound Refinery has won the Shell Oil Products US CEO\'s Environmental Excellence Award in addition to other environment recognitions. The first of these awards was, in part, related to the performance improvements related to a wastewater treatment plant added to the facility in the 1990s. Similarly, the refinery has been honoured in recognition of safety performance by the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association.
