Project Profile

Value: US$ 6 billion worth of products per year
Location: Alvin, Texas, USA
Capacity: 1.792m tonnes/year of ethylene
Area: 2,400-acres
Start-up Year: 1973

The 2,400-acre Chocolate Bayou Chemicals Complex is located 45 miles south of Houston near the Gulf of Mexico. The plant manufactures two main product lines - olefins and polypropylene - and ships product by rail, roadway, pipeline and barge. The complex is home to the second largest hydrocarbons cracker in the U.S. The Chocolate Bayou facility includes two polypropylene units - the most recent of which was added early in 1999 - and two olefins units. The complex employs more than 350 full-time employees as well and produces more than six billion pounds of product per year. In 2002 the Chocolate Bayou PP1 unit was decommissioned and a Hobbs C02 treating system was brought online. Further on in 2006 the operator the decommissioned the PP2 unit at the complex. Ineos Olefins & Polymers USA is the operator of the project with 100% interest.
