The Kitchen Lights Unit is located in the development region of Deutsche Oel & Gas AG, covering 83,300 acres (approx. 337 square kilometres), is the largest development region in Cook Inlet. Altogether 16 production platforms currently produce crude oil and natural gas in Cook Inlet. The oldest production platform was set up by the Shell oil company and dates back to 1964. In line with strong production operations in the 60s and 70s, several gas and oil pipelines run through and around Cook Inlet.
The eastern shore of the bay, meaning the area around Kenai/Nikiski, is also well-linked to gas supply lines to meet the demand for electricity and heating of southern Alaska in the long term. Pipelines also lead to a plant which converts natural gas to liquid gas (LNG) for export, a fertilizer factory and a refinery which can process crude oil. In September 2015, the operator installed a new plarform and first gas from the platform is expected to flow starting the end of 2015.
