Project Profile

Value: US$30 billion
Location: Sarita Bay, approximately 10 km north of Anacla at the southern end of Alberni Inlet on Vancouver Island, Canada
Capacity: 24‐mtpa (million tonnes per annum) - into four 6 mtpa (million tonnes per annum) LNG production trains
Area: unknown
Start-up Year: 2022

On July 8th, 2014, Steelhead LNG Corp. and the Huu-ay-aht First Nations signed an Opportunity Development Agreement to work together to explore developing a liquefied natural gas (LNG) project on HFN-owned land at Sarita Bay, approximately 10 km north of Anacla at the southern end of Alberni Inlet on Vancouver Island. The proposed US$30 billion LNG Project, which includes a 24‐mtpa (million tonnes per annum) land‐based facility, is one of the largest proposed LNG projects in British Columbia. The development of the Sarita Bay site would be split into four 6 mtpa (million tonnes per annum) LNG production trains, which is reflected in the application. Steelhead LNG is currently working with pipeline companies to explore infrastructure options to deliver natural gas from northern British Columbia to western Vancouver Island. On November 29, 2014, at the Huu-ay-aht First Nations People’s Assembly in Port Alberni, Huu-ay-aht citizens voted in favour of continuing to explore the proposed Project. The People’s Assembly vote approves the lease of Huu-ay-aht Treaty Settlement Lands to the proposed Project and the carrying out of comprehensive environmental, traditional-use and technical studies in advance of a final investment decision expected in 2018. The project is expected to start-up operations in 2022.
