Start-up Year: 1989
The Bullwinkle field, about 150 miles (241 kilometres) southwest of New Orleans in the Gulf of Mexico, is located on Green Canyon Block 65. It is positioned in 1,353 feet (412 metres) of water and lies in the Pliocene-Pleistocene level. Currently, it produces 4,000 boepd. The discovery well was drilled in October 1983 on Green Canyon Block 65. Bullwinkle TLP developed the field, and production officially began July 1989. In February 1996, Shell decided to expand the platform to accommodate more production. The current processing capacity of the Bullwinkle TLP is 20,000 boepd.
The 1996 facility expansion added 3,629 tonnes of equipment and piping. At the time of construction, it was the world\'s tallest offshore drilling platform - it weighs 78,000 tons (71,000 tonnes) and stands 1,651 feet (503 meters) high. Bullwinkle was designed to withstand hurricane winds, massive waves and stress-reversals produced by small waves. The structures legs are 120 feet (37 meters) and 54 feet (16 meters) in diameter (rolled steel plate) and the cross bracing is 48 feet (15 meters) in diameter. This US$500 million platform took 12 tugboats and the construction of the world\'s largest barge to haul Bullwinkle offshore. Two additional subsea fields, Manatee and Aspen (BP operated) were constructed and connected to the platform in 2002.
