Project Profile

Value: US$420 million
Location: 60 km southwest of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada
Reserves: 24 million barrels of 2P reserves and another 90 million barrels of contingent resources
Production: 12,000 bpd bitumen
Discovery year: winter 2006-2007

Thickwood is a long-term development prospect with dual-zone potential, lying approximately 65 km west of Fort McMurray, offsetting a competitor’s producing SAGD project.

By early 2012 Grizzly had drilled 59 cored delineation wells and shot 31 km of 2-D seismic in 10 lines. Grizzly’s independent evaluation by GLJ as at December 31, 2012 assigned 24 million barrels of 2P (proved plus probable) reserves and another 90 million barrels of contingent resources to the property.

There are two target reservoirs at Thickwood. The primary reservoir is the Wabiskaw D (or Upper McMurray). It consists of stacked channels of clean, blocky sands up to 20 metres thick, with no bottom water and a continuous cap rock of mudstone, and is amenable to SAGD development. It is overlain by the thinner but more saturated and laterally extensive Wabiskaw A reservoir that will require a different extraction model, such as cyclic steam stimulation.

Technology

The project plans for 48 steam-assisted gravity drainage well pairs from four surface pads and 88 cyclic steam stimulation wells from eight surface pads, along with a central processing facility.

Phase 1 - 6,000 bpd , start-up to be decided.
Phase 2 - 6,000 bpd , start-up to be decided.

Oil Sands Conservation Act application with the Regulator was filed in February 2015. The final regulatory decision is still not announced.
