Enbridge Athabasca plans to undertake an expansion of the existing Athabasca Pipeline to accommodate pipeline capacity requirements of the Christina Lake oil sands project operated by Cenovus. The Athabasca Pipeline transports crude oil from various oil sands projects to the mainline hub at Hardisty, Alberta. Following this expansion, the capacity of the Athabasca Pipeline will be approximately 570,000 bpd, depending on crude slate.
The proposed pipeline capacity expansion will be achieved through modifications at five of our existing pump station facilities, as well as the addition of four new pump stations. It was designed to complement the construction of a new 36-inch diameter crude oil pipeline from Kirby Lake Terminal to Battle River Terminal, the so-called “pipeline twinning project”, which lifted Athabasca\'s transmission capacity to 800,000 bpd in 2017.
Modifications to Existing Pump Stations:
- Athabasca Terminal – Replacement of three existing pump/motor units with three 5,750 hp pump/motor units.
- Cheecham Terminal – Replacement of two existing pump/motor units with three 5,750 hp pump/motor units.
- Kirby Lake Terminal – Replacement of three existing pump/motor units with five 5,750 hp pump/motor units.
- Kehew Pump Station – Installation of one 5,750 hp pump/motor unit and modifications to two existing pump/motor units.
- Elk Point Pump Station – Replacement of two existing pump/motor units with three 5,750 hp pump/motor units.
New Pump Stations:
- Lynton Pump Station – Installation of three 5,750 hp pump/motor units.
- Janvier Pump Station – Installation of three 5,750 hp pump/motor units.
- Bonnyville Pump Station – Installation of three 5,750 hp pump/motor units.
- Vermilion Pump Station – Installation of four 5,750 hp pump/motor units.
Auto Pig Bypass piping will also be installed at all new and existing pump stations, with the exception of Cheecham and Athabasca Terminals.
