Smoky Hill project is an oil and gas project located in the Denver-Julesburg basin in Colorado, USA. Nighthawk Energy planned to drill two new wells on its Smoky Hill project in Colorado next quarter to further develop the Steamboat Hansen 8-10 discovery made in 2012. The company holds a 100% interest in the Smoky Hill project. The negotiations were underway to contract a drilling rig for this next development stage. Subject to rig availability and final permitting, Nighthawk anticipated drilling to begin as early as April 2013. This development phase was primarily aimed at increasing production as quickly as possible to generate free cash for further investment in the second half of 2013. The Steamboat Hansen 8-10 well discovered a Mississippian age oil reservoir at a depth of about 2,438 metres. It was the first well to be drilled in the area for more than 25 years and is located about 80 kilometres from the nearest Mississippian discovery. The well has been producing oil at an average rate of 239 barrels per day since late November 2012. A recent independent competent person’s report has estimated that the Steamboat Hansen discovery holds up to 4.89 million barrels of oil-in-place, with gross recoverable reserves of up to 755,000 barrels.
