Merchant Energy Holdings, LLC through Tallulah Gas Storage, LLC is in the process of developing the Tallulah Gas Storage project. This natural gas storage facility would provide for the injection, storage and withdrawal of natural gas into one or more underground salt dome caverns located in the South Tallulah salt dome formation in Madison Parish, Louisiana. The project includes a salt cavern with 24 Bcf working gas capacity (3 caverns of just over 8 Bcf each) in Initial Phase with start-up of capacity (dual cavern leaching) in 2015, 2016, 2017 & 2018.
The project will also have an injection capacity of 900 MMCFD and withdrawal capacity of 1,525 MMCFD into the following interstate pipelines: Southeast Supply Header/Sonat, Mid-Continent Express, Gulf South/Gulf Crossing and Columbia Gulf. The project received FERC Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity as a market based rate facility pursuant to Docket CP10-494 on 3/18/2011. Brine disposal test well completed to Wilcox formation indicating significant high perm and porosity sands. Geological, geomechanical and chemical laboratory testing was performed by Sandia Laboratories and subsequent results support the development of storage caverns.
