Project Profile

Value: US$5.5 billion
Location: From Edmonton to Canada’s western coast, Alberta, Canada
Capacity: 890,000 bpd  (from the existing 300,000 bpd)
Length: 900 kilometres additional (total: 2,050 kilometres)
Start-up year: December 2019

In operation since 1953, the Trans Mountain pipeline system (TMPL) is the only pipeline system in North America that transports both crude oil and refined products to the west coast. TMPL moves product from Edmonton, Alberta, to marketing terminals and refineries in the central British Columbia region, the Greater Vancouver area and the Puget Sound area in Washington state, as well as to other markets such as California, the U.S. Gulf Coast and overseas through the Westridge marine terminal located in Burnaby, British Columbia. TMPL transports crude oil, refined and semi-refined products together in the same line. KMEP (Kinder Morgan) plans to expand Trans Mountain, which extends from Edmonton to Canada’s western coast, to 890,000 b/d from 300,000 b/d by twinning it and adding storage and pump stations. Since Trans Mountain was first built, the pipeline has adapted to meet the growing needs of customers. The pipeline was most recently expanded in 2008. Trans Mountain is planning to file the facilities application with the NEB in late 2013. Filing the application will initiate regulatory review of the expansion facilities. If the regulatory application process is successful, construction of the new pipeline could begin as early as 2016. The expanded capacity would be ready for use in 2017. The route of the proposed Trans Mountain expansion will essentially follow the existing 1,150-kilometre pipeline between Strathcona County, AB and Burnaby, BC. Along this span, approximately 900 kilometres of new pipeline are being proposed. The projected capital cost is US$5 billion and in conclusion includes:

• Twinning the existing pipeline, where possible, within the existing right-of-way
• Adding new pump stations along the route
• Increasing the number of storage tanks at existing facilities
• Expanding Westridge Marine Terminal

Operators:

KMEP (Kinder Morgan): Operator with 100% interest
