The Crossfield storage facility is owned and operated by the Crossfield storage joint venture (CrossAlta Gas Storage & Services Ltd.) a joint venture created between TransCanada PipeLines Limited and BP Canada Energy Group ULC to run the project. The storage facility is strategically located on the TransCanada Alberta pipeline system. It is located near the town of Crossfield, Alberta, Canada, 50km north of Calgary. Natural gas is stored in an underground depleted gas reservoir that has been used to produce gas at this location since the 1960’s. The plant’s electrically-driven compressors and gas processing facilities are staffed 24 hours a day. The type of the facility is Depleted underground natural gas reservoir. The facility has a working gas capacity of 68 Bcf and a peak withdrawal rate of 550mmcf/day. TransCanada Corporation has entered into an agreement to acquire BP’s 40% interest in the assets of the Crossfield Gas Storage facility in November 2012. This US$210 million transaction will give TransCanada 100% ownership in the facility located in Crossfield, Alberta. TransCanada has operated the Crossfield Gas Storage facility since 2011. Closing of the transaction is subject to certain conditions being satisfied and is expected to occur by the first quarter of 2013.
