Project Profile

Value: Undisclosed
Location: Prince William and Fairfax Counties, Virginia, USA
Capacity: 142,000 dekatherms of natural gas per day
Length: 1.46 miles
Start-up Year: December 2012

Williams’ Transco pipeline delivers natural gas to its customers through its 10,000-mile pipeline system, extending from South Texas to New York City. In order to meet the increasing demand for natural gas in Virginia, Washington D.C., and Maryland, Williams developed a proposal in 2009 known as the Mid-Atlantic Connector Expansion project, allowing for the transportation of approximately 142,000 dekatherms of natural gas per day (enough gas to serve about 600,000 homes) to the region by November 2012. The project involves the construction of a new 1.46 miles section of pipe in Prince William and Fairfax Counties, Virginia and the replacement of 1.34 miles of existing pipe in Fairfax County, Virginia.

In addition, the project will enable the company to remove certain above-ground and underground facilities from the Virginia Run community in Fairfax County. In addition, Williams’ proposal includes adding or replacing a combined 18,950 horsepower of compression at two existing Virginia compressor facilities. Before Williams can modify any facilities, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) requires interstate pipeline operators like Williams to obtain a federal Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity, in addition to various state and local permits. Williams filed its Certificate Application with FERC on Nov. 12, 2010. The project is owned and developed by Williams Partners.
