Marathon Oil is drilling ahead on the Innsbruck oil and gas prospect at Mississippi Canyon Block 993 in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. The Miocene-aged prospect, located southeast of the Gunflint discovery, is believed to have the potential to hold 115 million barrels of oil equivalent. The semi-submersible Maersk Developer is on location in 6,290 feet of water and is drilling toward a planned total depth of about 29,000 feet. The existing wellbore at Innsbruck, which Marathon had been long planning to re-enter, was abandoned after penetrating to a depth of 20,000 feet as a result of the Macondo drilling moratorium. In 2013, Marathon plans to spud three exploration wells and two appraisal probes in the US Gulf. Marathon is the operator of Innsbruck and holds a 45% working interest.
