The Strachan Gas Complex is located in Alberta’s west country – 200 kilometres southwest of the city of Edmonton and is interconnected to Keyera’s Nordegg and Brazeau River gas plants. Gas processing services at the Strachan gas plant include inlet compression, sour gas processing, gas dehydration, deep-cut natural gas liquids recovery, sulphur handling with railcar access and other related services. The plant receives its raw gas to process from numerous wells connected by an extensive network of pipelines. The Strachan gas plant is one of Keyera’s largest processing facilities and is seen as a strategic asset in its processing portfolio. The raw inlet capacity is 7,748 103m3/day (maximum), while the sulphur inlet capacity is 948 tonnes/day. Sales gas is 5,775 103m3/day, natural gas liquids is 926 m3/day and condensate is around 1,382 m3/day. There is a number of connected Keyera gathering pipelines including Strachan North Pipeline, Strachan Ferrier North, Strachan Nisku Pipeline, Ram River Pipeline and Burnt Timber Pipeline.
Product delivery points:
Sales gas: TransCanada Pipeline
Natural gas liquids: Pipelined or Trucked
Condensate: Trucked or pipelined
Sulphur: Liquid molt or formed prill by railcar
The plant construction started in 1970 and in 1971 Strachan Plant commenced operations. During the period 1972-1978, an enhanced liquid recovery - propane/butane unit and inlet separators solar turbines were added. In 1980, construction of Prill Facilities (Sulphur Handling) started and in 1996 a C550/C1000 compressor was added as well. In 2000, an instrumentation upgrade (DCS) took place and in 2004 a waste heat recovery project was completed. During 2008, a second NGL truck loading rack was built, while later in 2011 an NGL pipeline was added. The operator of the complex is currently Keyera Corporation with 98.2%, with CNR Rimbey holding the remaining 1.8%.
