Maricopa Project is located in southwest San Joaquin Basin within the greater, giant (3.5 million barrels) Midway Sunset oil field in California. Challenger (together with its Joint Venture partner Solimar Energy Limited) continued the exploration and development of the Maricopa Project. Each partner holds a 50% interest. The project covers an area of 120 acres (gross). Solimar is producing 23o API oil from two wells (Wellington Maricopa-6 & -7) at approximately 28 bopd. Water cut in the Maricopa-6 well is declining.
Production is from the Contact Sandstone reservoir between 3,300 feet and 3,500 feet. Detailed analysis of potential indicates at least one additional vertical well development location within the 40 acre productive lease. Well predicted to IP at 25-30 bopd. In March 2008, the Wellington Maricopa #6 well was the first well to be drilled at the Maricopa Project. This well was successfully production in late April 2008 and produced oil at an average daily rate of 35 barrels of oil per day and gas was stabilised at an average daily rate of 120,000 cubic feet per day.
Plans for a more sophisticated and cost effective water disposal system are progressing. Solimar Energy is also looking at the possibility of approaching other producers in the area to ascertain if they would be interested in participating in the costs of installing a water disposal line which they would then have access to. Challenger (together with its joint venture partner Solimar Energy) has several future well locations identified, and consideration is also being given to drilling a horizontal well. A new geologic review has also been undertaken to identify further new drilling locations to increase potential production.
Solimar has formally closed on the sale of the 120 acre Maricopa property to an undisclosed private buyer for a total purchase price of US $1,250,000. (February, 2013)
