Project Profile

Location: Green River Basin in Sublette County, Wyoming, USA
Start-up Year: 2015
Reserves: 10.5 trillion cubic feet (300 km3) of gas

The Jonah Field is a large natural gas field in the Green River Basin in Sublette County, WY. The field is approximately 32 miles south of Pinedale and 65 miles north of Rock Springs on US HWY 191 in Southwestern Wyoming. The average elevation at Jonah is approximately 7,000 feet. Jonah is located between the Green River on the west and the Wind River Mountains on the east. According to the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the productive area encompasses 30,500 acres. This acreage includes approximately 28,580 acres of federal surface and mineral estate managed by the BLM; 1,280 acres of State of Wyoming surface and minerals; and 640 acres of private surface/federal minerals. The presence of natural gas in and around Sublette County was known for years, but it was not deemed practical to extract. The Jonah Field proved viable after the drilling of the McMurry Oil Company Jonah-Federal #1-5 in January of 1993. Jonah Field is known for being one of the largest on-shore natural gas discoveries in the USA in the early 1990s. In 2012, BP operates 190 wells in the Jonah Field. The field contains 10.5 trillion cubic feet (300 km3) of gas.

Linn Energy LLC will acquire the share of BP in the Jonah Field for US$1.03 billion. The company is expecting production of around 145MMcfe/d, proved reserves of approximately 730 Bcfe, 73% natural gas, 23% NGL and 4% oil from the properties. LINN has hedged almost 100% of the oil and natural gas production associated with this transaction through 2017. It is expected to close the deal on or before 31 July 2012, subject to a preferential right of purchase that encompasses substantially all of the properties. The other partner in the field is EnCana Corporation.
