Project Profile

Location: Tanzanian side of Lake Tanganyika, western Tanzania
Area: 10,000 sq km

In April 2011, the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, through the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) invited companies to bid for a Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) covering the Lake Tanganyika exploration area. The offered block covers an area of approximately 10,000 square kilometres on the Tanzanian side of Lake Tanganyika, which is located inland, in the west of the country along the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Lake Tanganyika is one of the lakes created by the Albertine Rift, as part of the East African Rift and the larger Great Rift Valley. The Albertine Rift extends from the southern end of Lake Tanganyika to the northern end of Lake Albert in Uganda, which has seen great exploration success. Tullow Oil previously entered into negotiations for a PSA covering the Lake Tanganyika North area in 2007 but an agreement was not concluded. The Lake Tanganyika South acreage was awarded to Beach Energy Limited in the 2007 Onshore Bid Round, and Beach signed the PSA in June 2010.
