Project Profile
Value: US$227 million
Location: Temane, Mozambique
Capacity: 458 MMcfd
Start-up Year: 2012
Sasol Petroleum International, the upstream subsidiary of Sasol Ltd., has started up its 63 million gigajoule/year (158 MMscfd) expansion at the Temane gas processing plant. Capacity now is 458 MMscfd. Sasol’s partners in the plant are Companhia Mocambicana de Hidrocarbonetos SA, representing the Mozambican government, and the International Finance Corp. of the World Bank, Washington, DC. The gas plant began full-scale production of 300 MMcfd in 2004 and is connected to the South African market via a 865-km crossborder pipeline. From the added 158 MMcfd launched in 2012, the Mozambican market was allocated about 68 MMscfd to meet increased local demand, while another 68 MMscfd was allocated to the South African market. The remaining 22.5 MMscfd represents the royalty gas allocated to the Mozambican government. In February 2016, Sasol obtained approval for a field development plan to harness resources from five gas wells and seven oil wells near the Pande and Temane, with the gas to be processed at the associated processing facility. In May 2016, Sasol announced the plant would be expanded to 197 million gigajoules to meet additional demand. Subsequently, in April 2017, it said it would build an industrial park near Temane and Pande.
