Boreas West Block is located on Mississippi Canyon Block 762 in 3,094 feet (943 metres) of water in the Gulf of Mexico is the West Boreas field. Shell serves as the operator of the block. Drilled by Transocean\'s Cajun Express semisub, the West Boreas No. 3 well reached a total depth of 23,084 feet (7,036 metres). The well encountered hydrocarbons and is estimated to hold 100 million barrels of resources. Shell is the operator of the block with 100% interest.
Shell decided to develop the West Boreas discovery via the deepwater Mars B development via the Olympus platform with 100,000 bpd capacity launched in 2014. Mars B includes subsea wells at West Boreas and South Deimos, export pipelines, and a shallow-water platform at West Delta 143. Shell expected this to help lift Mars’ production from around 60,000 boepd previously. Shell said it had lowered costs for Mars B by using standardisation techniques which included software modelling of lifting activities.
