Project Profile

Value: US$15 billion
Location: North of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Capacity: 150,000 barrels per day
Start-up Year: -

North West Redwater Partnership is building a refinery in Alberta region. The bitumen refinery is the only one designed from the ground up to reduce its environmental impact. This foresight means it will be the first to incorporate gasification and a carbon capture and storage solution, setting an international precedent for responsible development. This project’s integrated and cost effective CO2 management will provide a competitive advantage, proving that Alberta’s energy production, inclusive of oil sands bitumen, can be both globally competitive and environmentally responsible.

The Partnership has completed designs, ordered and received long delivery equipment and secured all the necessary regulatory approvals to build a three phase, 150,000 barrels per day bitumen blend refinery that will produce diesel, diluent and other products for the Alberta and world markets. The signing of the BRIK agreement in February 2011 has resulted in accelerated engineering and design, targeting a sanction for the first phase in late 2011 or early 2012. Ultimately, the Partnership will invest approximately US$15 billion over the three phases to produce cleaner, high value end products needed by Albertans and global markets. Bitumen feedstock will be provided by Canadian Natural and by the Government of Alberta through its bitumen royalty-in-kind initiative.
