The Kakuna prospect is located in water depths of up to 1,134 metres on Green Canyon Blocks 416 (W ½), 460, 504, 505 (W ½), 548 and 549 in the Gulf of Mexico. Serving as operator of the block is Nexen Petroleum, holding a 72.5% interest; Statoil holds the remaining 27.5%. In January 2010, Nexen submitted an Exploration Plan to MMS for operations at its Kakuna prospect, proposing to drill, evaluate and temporarily abandon two well locations, A and B. Nexen failed to encounter commercial hydrocarbons in its Kakuna well and plugged and abandoned the well. Kakuna was drilled to a depth of 9,235 meters by the ENSCO 8502 (UDW semisub).
