Project Profile
Estimated Value: US$22.5 billion
Location: Alberta, Canada
Start-up Year: 2016
The Suncor Oil Sands Expansion project is expected to boost crude oil production at the company\'s oil sands operation by 200,000 bpd. Production capacity is expected to increase to 260,000 barrels per day as a result of a US$1 billion investment in both upgrading improvements and development of in-situ technology. A third upgrader to be located in Suncor’s existing facilities in Fort McMurray has been designed to produce light crude oil and production from the new facility is expected to be brought online in 2016.
Suncor also intends to build and operate a petroleum coke gasifier that would reduce the company\'s reliance on natural gas. The gasifier is planned to process about 20% of the proposed upgrader\'s petroleum coke into synthetic gas. The synthetic gas would then be used to supply hydrogen and fuel. The gasifier will add an estimated US$600m to the total cost of this project.
