The Sarir Field was discovered in southern Cyrenaica during 1961 and is considered to be the largest oil field in Libya, with estimated oil reserves of 12 Gbbl (1.9 km3). Sarir is operated by the Arabian Gulf Oil Company (AGOCO), a subsidiary of the state-owned National Oil Corporation (NOC).
The production from the eastern oil field of Sarir reached 160,000 bpd in 2011 and started to send crude oil to the export terminal of Tobruk. The oil field was discovered in 1961 and is now considered to be the largest oil field in Libya. The company cut production by 20,000 bpd from the Sarir and Mesla fields in May 2012 due to protests and the production is currently at 350,000 bpd.
