Project Profile

Value: US$2,561 million
Location: 60 km northeast of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada
Start-up year: March 2015
Estimated reserves: 3.7 billion barrels of bitumen (0.44 billion proved, 2.40 billion probable and 0.86 billion possible), (December, 2013)
Average production: 25,000 bpd (1Q, 2016)

Proposed SAGD (steam assisted gravity drainage) in-situ thermal recovery project. The field has been fully delineated by the drilling of 650 appraisal wells. The Sunrise oil sands field will be a four-phase development and is expected to be sanctioned in 2008 with first production of bitumen in 2011-2012, building to 200,000 bpd by the end of the next decade with a 40 year production plateau. All four phases will be completed by 2017.

Phase 1 – 60,000 bpd (made up of 2 plants – each producing 30,000 bpd), approved Dec 2005, cost estimated at $2.5 Bil, timing TBD – could be 2014.
Phase 2 – 50,000 bpd, approved, timing - 2014
Phase 3 – 50,000 bpd, approved, timing - 2016
Phase 4 – 50,000 bpd, approved, timing - 2018

The Sunrise project will entail central processing facility and multiple well pads. Additional infrastructure will include roads, a pipeline to supply fuel gas, an electrical power line, and oil sales line and a diluent return line. The bitumen will be piped to Hardisty in Alberta, where it will be transported via existing pipeline networks for refining. Energy island could include a natural-gas-fired cogeneration plant with a capacity of 120MW.
