Oman Oil Company Exploration and Production LLC (OOCEP), the upstream arm of the wholly Omani government-owned energy and strategic investment firm Oman Oil Company, is expected to commence exploratory drilling in Block 42 during the third quarter of 2014. Block 42, located in the eastern part of the Sultanate, is a key part of OOCEP\'s substantial portfolio of operated and non-operated hydrocarbon assets in Oman. Acquired in March 2012 under an Exploration and Production Sharing Agreement (EPSA) signed with the Ministry of Oil and Gas, Block 42 represents something of a \'launchpad\' for OOCEP\'s efforts to venture into hydrocarbon exploration operations in the Sultanate. With hardly any seismic data collected previously on the block and a paltry three wells drilled in the past, the concession is seen as a classic frontier exploratory domain, and thus ideal for OOCEP to gradually develop and hone its oil and gas exploration capabilities. Covering an area of approximately 25,600 square kilometres, Block 42 encompasses the northeast coastal range of the Oman Mountains and the basin immediately to the south (under Ramlat Sharqiyah). Exploratory wells drilled by previous operators have already unearthed the presence of hydrocarbons in this vast concession. Exploratory efforts were intensified last year with OOCEP successfully completing a new 2D seismic acquisition and gravity-magnetic data acquisition programme in the first ever seismic programme ever undertaken by the operator. Based on the interpretation of reprocessed seismic data, the company drew up an interim exploration prospect and lead inventory focused on a prioritised area within the Block. OOCEP is the operator with a 100 per cent interest.
