Petrogas LLC was established in January 1999, and in the same year acquired onshore Block 7 (Butabul concession, 100%) in Oman from Elf Petroleum and became the sole operator of the block. Since then, Petrogas LLC has produced more than 10 million barrels of oil from the block.
Since becoming the operator, Petrogas LLC has managed to minimise the decline in the field’s performance namely from 50% decline in the 4 years leading to 1999 to 7% per year and has successfully maintained production for the subsequent 13 years. Remaining reserves (2P) are estimated to be 0.74 to 2.14 million barrels and the current production (mid 2013) is around 1050 barrels of oil per day (bopd).
The major producing field is the Sahmah field (75% of current Block 7 production) with the Rija and Ramlat fields producing the balance. A total of 24 wells have been drilled in the Sahmah field, of which 15 are currently producing and 6 are injecting water. A total of 3 wells have been drilled on the Ramlat field and the field has minimal facilities where the oil is produced into a tank and from there trucked to the Sahmah facilities. A total of 5 wells have also been drilled in the Rija field, and the field also has minimal facilities with its oil trucked to the Sahmah facilities. Combined Block 7 oil production is exported from the Sahmah facilities via a 100 km 10” pipeline and metered before entering the PDO operated main oil line inside Sahmah Booster Station.
The Block produces light quality (44o API) oil which is sold as Oman Blend, after being mixed with other oils now being produced by other operators. Current activities are concentrated on sustaining production levels through the maintenance of the existing well stock, increasing water injection. Operations are conducted under a Production Sharing Contract (Petroleum Agreement).
