Kuwait National Petroleum Company\'s (KNPC) Clean Fuels Project (CFP) will see the upgrade and integration of the refineries at Mina Abdulla (MAB) and Mina Al Ahmadi (MAA).
It will increase their combined capacity from 736,000 bpd to 800,000 bpd, and lower the sulphur content of petroleum products to 5%.
MAB is located 60km south of Kuwait City, and MAA is located 45km south of Kuwait City.
The upgrade and integration will be performed under three separate contract packages; one at MAA and two at MAB.
It is scheduled for completion in mid-2018.
KNPC’s Al-Mutairi in late April also provided an update on the company’s second long-planned flagship – the US$15.7 billion CFP to upgrade, integrate and expand to a combined 800,000 bpd the company’s existing MAA and MAB refineries. This was reported to be 82.5% complete.
Closure of the much-delayed international tranche of the project financing remains pending – despite the CEO’s prediction in early March of completion by the end of that month of an estimated US$4 billion deal expected to be signed with a club of 10 banks and several export credit agencies. 95% of the 1.2 billion-dinar (US$4 billion) loan signed with local banks in early 2016 was said to have been spent.
