In 1987, Total signed an agreement for the exploration of the Block 10 (East Shabwa). Since the signing of the Production Sharing Agreement on April 22, 1987, successful development of East Shabwa has been due to close team work between the Ministry of Oil and Minerals and the joint venture partners, who are today: Total E&P Yemen (Operator) 28.57%, Occidental Yemen Ltd 28.57%, Sinochem 28.57% and Kufpec 14.28%. The block is located in Masila Basin, onshore Mesozoic basin, Yemen.

Oil was discovered on Block 10 (East Shabwa) in 1992. When the development of Block 10 was launched in 1996, the recoverable reserves on the three fields: Kharir, Atuf, and Wadi Taribah were estimated at 50 million barrels. Total E&P Yemen and its partners have now reached a milestone of a cumulative production of 100 million barrels, twice the initial estimated recoverable reserves. Development and production are carried out while implementing a strict policy on safety at work. A low frequency less than 1 lost time incident per million of working hours was achieved in 2007 for nearly 6 million working hours.
