Iran has launched the Ilam Petrochemical Complex project. The first phase of Ilam Petrochemical Complex is situated on the Ilam Province, west of Iran. The project was started in 2005 through investing US$650 million plus 1 trillion rials (US$1 billion in total). The complex is projected to produce 460,000 tons of ethylene and 120,000 tons of propylene per year. National Petrochemical Company (NPC) will be the operator of the project.
The second phase was launched in September 2016 with the beginning of olefin and sweetening facilities. However, a shortage of ethylene feedstock meant Ilam Petrochemical initially pumped less produce than its quota despite the newly launched expansion.
