Total is looking to re-develop Qatar\'s offshore Al Khalij oil field in a bid to stabilise and boost its recovery rate. Total recently negotiated a 25 year extension to its licence to operate the field. The deal was due to expire in 2014. Production from the field, which was as high as 50,000 bpd in 2005 and 40,000 bpd in 2008, currently stands at around 25,000 bpd. Total discovered the field in 1991 after signing up for a 25 year operating license two years before. Located about 130 kilometres east of the Qatari coast, offshore block 6, Qatar, Al Khalij field was discovered by Total in 1991 and commenced production in 1997 pursuant to an Exploration and Production Sharing Agreement (EPSA), which was signed in 1989 and is due for expiry in early 2014. Under the new HOA, QP and Total will have a 60/40 operating interest in the field following the expiry of the EPSA and Total will continue to operate the field.
