Project Profile

Value: US$8-12 billion
Location: Saudi Arabia Eastern Province, Safaniya, Saudi Arabia
Production: 1.2 million bpd
Start-up Year: 2016 (Phases 4&5)

The fourth and fifth phase upgrades will sustain capacity at around 1.2-1.3 million bpd. The scope will be similar to the earlier phases and will involve the rehabilitation of the field’s crude-gathering facilities.

In December 2016, Saipem was awarded the main EPC contract, worth an estimated US$500 million, for Safaniya’s fourth phase – covering 10 new wellhead platforms and nine decks.

The same month saw McDermott selected from among the signatories of Aramco’s long-term agreements (LTAs) for an estimated US$700 million engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract on the fifth-phase redevelopment about to get under way at the supergiant Safaniyah field.
The deal covers nine offshore decks and jackets as well as modifications to existing platforms.

In January 2017, Larsen & Toubro, in consortium with Emas Chiyoda Subsea, was awarded an engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) contract for the supply and installation of four wellhead decks at Safaniya.

Bids are now due by the end of June for the EPCI contract on the sixth phase of redevelopment. The package - thought to be worth up to US$1 billion - covers 10 jackets, nine platform decks, an electrical distribution platform, pipelines and cabling, and the removal of some obsolete facilities.
