Project Profile

Value: US$1 billion
Location: City of Bandar Abbas in southern Iran
Refining capacity: 300,000 bpd
Gasoline production: Increase by 4.8 million litres per day
Storage capacity: 2,830,000 barrels
Start-up Year: 2014

Bandar Abbas refinery (also known as Refinery #8), one of the biggest in the Middle East with refining capacity of 300,000 bpd, was constructed in a 7 square km area near the city of Bandar Abbas in southern Iran. The feed of this refinery is heavy oil plus some condensate extracted from Sarkhoon gas treating plant. It\'s daily products were planned to comprise 46,000 barrels of gasoline, 37,000 barrels of Kerosene and jet fuel, about 67,000 barrels of furnace fuel, about 70,000 barrels of gas oil, 5,000 barrels of tar, together with more than 7,000 barrels of LPG.

The products of this unit were expected partially to be exported as well as to meet the demands of the southern parts of Iran, and moreover, to be partially transported to the central regions through the 450 km long 26\" Bandar Abbas - Rafsanjan pipeline. The refinery is currently under upgrade, in order to increase gasoline production in the Refinery by 4.8 million litres per day. In addition, construct new units and modify the process to minimize production heavy products, as well as install new storage tanks with total capacity of 2,830,000 Barrels. The project is currently under construction with expected completion date of 2014 and with an estimated budget of US$700 millions, which reached the US$1 billion. The upgraded refinery will process Kharg Exported Heavy Crude Oil & Condensate. The main refining units are:

- Heavy Naphta Hydrotreater - 25,000 (BPSD) - Axens

- Continuous Catalyst Regeneration & Octanizing - 25,000 (BPSD) - Axens

- Light Naphta Hydrotreater - 16,000 (BPSD) – Axens

- Light Naphta Isomerization - 16,000 (BPSD) - Axens

- Gas Oil (Diesel) Hydrodesulphurization - 50,000 (ton/days) - Axens

- Sulfur Recovery - 120 (ton/days) - Prosernat

- Amine Gas Treating - 200 (ton/days) - Non-Licensed

- Sour Water Stripping - 1.817 (ton/days) - Non-Licensed

Joint venture of Snamprogetti and Chiyoda undertook the EP and supervision of this project. Pidec was responsible for granting the license and basic of FCC and SRU unit, as well as won the EPC contract and the pre-commissioning and commissioning work. The role of OIEC in construction was the civil works, in which OIEC achieved about 130,000 cubic metres concrete work. OIEC also constructed 15 industrial and non-industrial buildings, such as substations, control rooms, administrative and was responsible for the underground pipelines and cable laying project. This pipeline included the sea water distribution network, cooling water systems, chemical sewage system, and was equipped with conduits and cable works. In the system, pipes of up to 104 inch were used, which were internally cement lined for protection against sea water corrosion.
