Project Profile

Location: Namakia East Central Closure, Madagascar, Africa
Area: 6,825 square km
Start-up Year: 2014

The Morondava block comprises 6,825 square km. It has two large Prospective Areas; one identified by the 2009 seismic acquisition and one confirmed by the review of the existing older seismic data. The two Prospective Areas cover over 31,000 acres in two portions of the block.

Two wells were drilled in the 1980’s; one had shows of oil and the other was a dry hole. Prospective Area 1 is the Saronanala Lead consisting of two structures in the Bemaraha carbonate section separated by a narrow graben. Saronanala East \"A\" is approximately 8,700 acres and Saronanala East “B” is approximately 8,300 acres. Prospective Area 2 is the Namakia East Central Closure at approximately 14,000 acres.

Hydrocarbon Potential is indicated by red closures which represent a greater than 50% probability of subsurface trapped hydrocarbons. Prospect Area 1 does not appear to have any significant areas with hydrocarbon exceeding background levels in either the Saronanala East \"A\" or \"B\" structures. Prospect Area 2 indicates areas of potential in the Namakia East with an indication of potential on the crestal position of the deep mapped closure. However, potential indicated outside of the mapped closure suggests the hydrocarbon trap may be in east-west trending Cretaceous turbidite channels. The current seismic coverage is insufficient to aid in the determination of the depths and continuity of the possible channel sand traps and the company is examining the need for additional seismic acquisition and the potential to enhance analysis with an Airborne Gravity Gradiometer survey.
