LUKOIL Overseas, who has accumulated experiences and expertise from its development and production activities of the West Qurna Phase 2 (the northern portion of the West Qurna oil field) nearby, will conduct exploration activities as Operator, retaining a 60% participating interest while INPEX holds a remaining 40% participating interest. INPEX and LUKOIL Overseas plan to carry out seismic surveys and to drill one exploratory.

In Febuary 2017 LUKOIL and INPEX have successfully completed the testing of the first exploratory well, Eridu-1, in Block 10 in southern Iraq. The well recorded a daily flow rate of more than 1,000 cubic meters (8,000 bopd) of sweet oil from the Mishrif horizon, confirming geological expectations of a large hydrocarbon field presence within the Block 10 contract area. Geological exploration at the block is in progress. The work program for 2017 includes the drilling and testing of an appraisal well Eridu-2.
