Project Profile

Value: US$4.5 billion
Location: Balhaf, coastline of Arabian sea,
Capacity: 6.7 Mtpa
Storage capacity: 625,000 bbls nominal volume
Pipeline length: 38 inch gas pipeline
Launch: October 2009

Yemen LNG was suspended by the operators in March 2015 as rebel insurgents seized army positions in the nearby city of Balhaf. With the global gas supply glut, Yemen LNG\'s market share was soon usurped by others. As of March 2017, industry reports indicated Yemen LNG was unlikely to restart soon, despite government noises on luring IOCs back to adjacent production areas.

The terminal is located in the coastline of Arabian Sea, between Aden and Mukalla cities. The terminal is operated by the Yemen Co. for Oil and Mineral Investments (YICOM), on behalf of the Yemen Government .Yemen’s only LNG export facility in Balhaf has reportedly stopped its operations after foreign experts were evacuated from the plant. The Yemen LNG project consists of two liquefaction trains with a total capacity of 6.7 Mtpa. It has three long-term contracts to supply LNG to GDF Suez, Kogas and Total Gas & Power.

Type of loading facilities include a Single Point Mooring Buoy (SPM) which is located three kilometres offshore and moored approximately 20m water depth. Three shipping pumps with capacity of 30,000 bbls/hours per pump are installed to enable a tanker to load in 24 hours. Five crude oil storage tanks (type floting roof) each of 125,800 bbls nominal capacity giving a total of 625,000 bbls nominal volume. Hand gauging is used in measurement of the quantity exported. The entire pipeline from the Central Processing unit (CPU) to the terminals, as well from the terminals to the export tanker is fully automated and can be operated from the oil handling terminal.

Yemen LNG sources gas from the Marib-Jawif concession area, where there are an estimated 9.15 trillion cubic feet of proven reserves, of which 1 tcf has been reserved for the domestic market.
