Block 9 is partly situated in Wadi Hadramut, a major valley that is surrounded by plateaus. Block 9 resides in the prolific Sayun-Masila Basin that has a proven hydrocarbon resource base. The high drilling success rate in Block 9 attests to the attractive hydrocarbon source-reservoir-seal combinations that are present.

Calvalley, as Operator of Block 9, has successfully employed horizontal drilling technology that enhances the productivity of the Hiswah field. Other shareholders in the block include operator Medco Energi with a 21.25% interest and Hood Oil on 21.25%, while YOGC holds a 15% stake.

Block 9 lies covers 2,234 square kilometres in the Sayun-Masila basin in Yemen’s Hadramaut province is estimated to hold proven plus probable reserves of 58.6 million barrels of oil. A 20 year construction contract was granted over the block by the Yemeni government in 2005 which the joint venture can apply to have extended for a further five years after 2025.
