Project Profile

Value: Undisclosed
Location: 55 km north west of Erbil, North West of Erbill Iraq
Reserves: gross 2C resources of around 250 mmbbls.
Area: 20 km length and up to 7 km width

In January 2015, an updated Competent Person’s Report (CPR) for Barda Rash eliminated gross 2P reserves of 190 million barrels, and reduced 2C resources from 1,243 billion barrels to 250 million barrels. After halting production for a spell in 2014, Afren, which was later liquidated, said the reservoirs had performed below prior expectations outlined in the Field Development Plant (FDP).

The Barda Rash PSC is located 55 km north west of Erbil. It is defined as an elongated anticline with surface expression of 20 km length and up to 7 km width. The reservoirs are principally fractured carbonates of various depositional settings. The licence period on the block extends to 2023 with two possible subsequent five year extensions available. Three wells have been drilled on the field to date, BR-1, BR-2 and BR-3, all of which have encountered oil. The main reservoir targets are the Cretaceous, Jurassic and Triassic sequences. The field is defined by good quality 2D seismic covering an area of 330 km. In 2009, the operator cancelled a contract with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) which would have provided for a refinery to handle crude from the Barda Rash PSC.

Operators:

Afren: Operator with 60% interest (liquidated)

Other: 40% interest
