Thee block covers an area of 544 km² in water depths of 70 metres. The block is located near the North Field, the largest natural gas field in the world. The Block 4N (Khuff) Exploration and Production Sharing Agreement has a 25 year contract term. It lies some 30 to 40 kilometres northwest of Qatar’s giant North field. The field has been subject to a four-year exploration programme, which included the drilling of two exploration wells, with the aim of intensifying the exploration and development of Qatar’s natural resources and increasing its hydrocarbon reserves. Qatar Petroleum (QP) and Wintershall entered into an exploration and production sharing agreement (EPSA) for Block 4 North in November 2008. Mitsui Gas Development Qatar joined in 2010 by acquiring 20% of the contractor’s interest under the EPSA with Wintershall retaining 80% interest and operatorship. Wintershall exited the block and the country in May 2015.
