Project reportedly aims to revive production at the Dammam oilfield, which was shut-in in 1981. The Dammam 7 production well was drilled in 1938 , and was Saudi Aramco’s first hole to produce hydrocarbons commercially on a long-term basis, according to the Saudi Aramco website. Dammam is now the oil capital of Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. Saudi Aramco believes Dammam could easily produce 100,000 bpd, however the production area has been built over with residential buildings. Dammam is still believed to hold around 500 million barrels of oil reserves.
