Project Profile

Value: US$600 million
Location: Offshore West Bukha field, Oman
Capacity: 20,000 barrels per day of oil and 45 million cubic feet per day of gas
Start-up Year: 2013

OOCEP is ploughing around US$600 million in the development of the Musandam Gas Plant project. The project involves the construction of an onshore processing unit at Musandam, which will then be connected to the offshore West Bukha field, off the Strait of Hormuz via a 1 kilometre long pipeline. Once this scope has been completed, the plant will process 20,000 barrels per day of oil and 45 million cubic feet per day of gas. Additionally, the plant will yield 52 tonnes per day of sulphur and 80 tonnes per day of LPG. As the first major energy infrastructure development in the Musandam Governorate, the project will catalyse economic growth in this strategically important Omani enclave overlooking the Strait of Hormuz. Besides, gas volumes produced by the facility will not only provide energy feedstock for the governorate\'s first gas-based power plant, but also potentially spur investments in industrial projects as well. Production in 2014 averaged 15,678 barrels of oil equivalent per day, at present sent for processing at the Khor Khawair plant in Ras al-Khaimah. Later, output may be added from nearby offshore Blocks 17 and 40 – officially dubbed the Musandam Block and the Musandam Offshore Block – under exploration by US-based PetroTel under contracts signed in 2009 and 2011 respectively.
