Spanning 2 million acres (11,099 square kilometres), Block 2 lies in water depths ranging from 1,312 to 9,842 feet (400 to 3,000 metres). During the first quarter of 2008, a 1 million acre (6,200-kilometre) 2D seismic survey was acquired and final processed data was delivered in February 2010. Statoil has since made a total of eight discoveries, with the most recent bringing total gas in-place to 620 bcm. Recoverable resource estimates range from 250 - 400 bcm. The eight discovery was made at the Mdalasini-1 well in March 2015, which uncovered 1.0 - 1.8 tcf at the southernmost edge of the block. The deposit is situated in Tertiary and Cretaceous sandstone. Gas from the production is intended to serve the 10 million tonne Tanzania LNG export project developed by Statoil and ExxonMobil, which is slated for launch in 2022. Block 2 is expected to begin serious engineering in 2017 before an FID taken one year later, which should set the project for a 2022-2023 launch window in-line with Tanzania LNG .

The Zafarai discovery is located in Block 2 offshore Tanzania in a water depth of 8,470 feet (2,582 metres). Statoil operates the license with a 65% interest; while ExxonMobil holds 35%. Statoil signed an agreement with ExxonMobil Exploration & Production Tanzania Ltd. to transfer 35% of its interest in the deepwater Block 2 off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean. Zafarai-1 encountered natural gas in a good-quality reservoir. The operator said it is too early to give any indication of size and commerciality. Drilling operations are ongoing and should take about three months to complete. The well is being drilled by the Ocean Rig Poseidon (UDW drillship) to a total depth of 16,900 feet (5,150 metres).

Giligiliani-1 exploration well is another prospect in the block 2. The well has resulted in a new natural gas discovery offshore Tanzania. The discovery of an additional 1.2 trillion cubic feet (tcf*) of natural gas in place in the Giligiliani-1 well brings the total of in-place volumes up to approx. 21 tcf in Block 2. The Giligiliani-1 discovery is located along the western side of Block 2 at a 2,500-metre water depth. The new gas discovery was made in Upper Cretaceous sandstones. This discovery has proven the gas play extends into the western part of Block 2, which opens additional prospects. Our success rate in Tanzania has been high and opening up a new area will be key to continuing our successful multi-well program. The Giligiliani-1 discovery is the venture’s seventh discovery in Block 2. It is preceded by the five high-impact gas discoveries Zafarani-1, Lavani-1, Tangawizi-1, Mronge-1 and Piri-1, and a discovery in Lavani-2.
