Project Profile

Value: US$20,049,325
Location: Southeast of Tehran
Area: 12,189 sq km

Sinopec is making final preparations to acquire seismic ahead of drilling its first well in 2008. Work commitments are said to include 2D seismic and the drilling of two exploratory wells at a minimum cost of US$19.61 million, in the initial four-year period. If commercial volumes of hydrocarbons are found, the contractor can spend a further US$38.95 million for additional operations, to include appraisal drilling. Previous known drilling in the high-risk frontier Garmsar block is limited to two dry wildcats, both operated by NIOC. Talkeh 1, reached a total depth of 2,530m in 1962, and Siah Kuh South 1 was drilled in 1964/1965 to a depth of 3,983m. Elsewhere Sinopec is having second thoughts on its Zavareh-Kashan Block in the Qom Basin of central Iran, as it has failed to establish the commerciality of the recent Aran find. It appears that only the first well of four has produced satisfactory results. The drilling results have revealed that a number of technical problems exist and that the structures are small and possibly breached.
