The Nassiriyah oil field and the adjacent Nassiriyah refinery, were the subject of a confidential memorandum of understanding signed August 2008 between the oil ministry and a partnership of Nippon Oil and Eni. Under the MOU Nippon will build the refinery and Eni will develop the oil field to supply the refinery with crude. Both projects are to be implemented on an EPC basis with Nippon providing the financing for the estimated US$5 billion project.
The field is estimated to contain reserves of around 4.4 billion barrels of crude. Nassiriyah now produces 40,000 bpd.
