Project Profile
Value; US$18-US$19 billion
Location: Industrial city of Ras Laffan, Qatar
Start-up Year: March 2011
The Pearl GTL project includes transporting and processing the gas to extract natural gas liquids and ethane, and the conversion of the remaining gas into liquid hydrocarbon products through the construction of a new fully integrated GTL complex in Ras Laffan Industrial City situated 80km north of Doha. The offshore platforms are connected to the plant through a 60km pipeline. Construction of the plant began in February 2007. The first sour gas began to flow into the plant in March 2011. When fully operational, the Pearl GTL project will have a capacity to produce 140,000 bpd of GTL products and 120,000bpd oil equivalent of LPG, condensate and ethane. Production from the first Pearl GTL train (phase I) began in March 2011. Start-up of the second train is expected to follow by 2012 (phase II). The plant uses Shell\'s proprietary Shell Middle Distillates Synthesis (SMDS) technology. The facilities are operated by Qatar Shell GTL, a Shell subsidiary.
KBR and JGC were the main contractors in a joint venture (JV). The JV were awarded contracts to provide the basis of design (BOD)/basis design package (BDP), front-end engineering design (FEED), project management and start-up support of the overall onshore Pearl GTL complex, along with engineering, procurement and construction management of the GTL synthesis, utilities and infrastructure sections of the complex. J. Ray McDermott, S.A. a subsidiary of McDermott International, Inc. was awarded a contract to engineer, construct, transport, install hook-up and pre-commission two wellhead platforms in Qatar\'s North Field, for the Pearl gas-to-liquids (GTL) project. Each platform, Pearl 1 and Pearl 2, weighs an average of 3,600 metric tonnes.
CB&I was awarded an EPC Contract to design and build a storage facility for the Pearl Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) production complex. Engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) scope of works for this part of the project included two storage farms, with 6 tanks at the harbor site and another 32 at the main complex which has a combined storage capacity of 900,000 cubic meters and utilises 120 km of piping systems. CB&I was also responsible for all associated mechanical, civil, building, electrical and instrumentation works for the project. The onsite work force for this package was around 2,000 employees. Descon were contracted to provide Civil and Mechanical works for the Utilities Flare Area (CM2B) of GTL Core Plant. Descons works involved 8.3 million direct Man-hours with a peak manpower of 2,400. Kentz Engineering and Construction Group were awarded a Framework Agreement to provide services in executing Plant Change Requests by Qatar Shell GTL Limited. Under the Framework Agreement, Kentz will provide engineering design, construction, supervision and procurement services for plant changes and projects at Pearl GTL plant, as well as to its offshore platforms, harbor tank farms, offloading jetties and connecting infrastructure. HHI completed its US$2 billion package – won in conjunction with Chiyoda – at the Pearl GTL plant at Ras Laffan, Qatar in November 2011, where Shell will separate, desulfurise and refine 1.6 billion cubic barrel feet of natural gas per day.
