Project Profile

Value: $237 Million
Startup Year: 2014
Location: Risha, Al Mafraq

The field was discovered in 1987. The field initially produced less than 30 million cubic feet per day, rising to 38 MMcf/d in 2003, but output has since declined to some 21 MMcf/d. The National Resource Authority of Jordan, which first discovered and operated the field, put reserves at 200 billion cubic feet, but other estimates of gas in place are double that.

The ministry plans to boost production more than tenfold, to at least 250 million cf/d by 2015. BP’s initial reports from the Risha field state that production of more than 330 million cubic feet a day could be possible from the field, however, this would depend on the recoverable reserves.

Risha is located near the Iraq border. IPG Oil and Gas Limited became the operator of the project with 100% interest in March 2016, but has since been dissolved.

Risha currently produces about 10 mmcf (283,000 cubic metres) per day, which generates about 1.25% of the electricity generated in the Kingdom.
The gas is used in the Central Electricity Generating Co. plant, which includes 4 gas turbines with a total capacity of 120 MW. The gas extracted from the wells is transported through a gas pipe to the treatment plant to be purified of impurities and water. It is then re-pumped to the gas station in the same area to produce electricity.
