Trans-Pakistan pipeline from Iran to India. Memorandum of Understanding has been signed for studies to be carried for construction and for enhancing oil and gas co-operation between the nations. The length of the proposed pipeline to carry gas from Iran through Pakistan to India is approx. 2,600 kms (1,615-miles). The project, conceived a decade ago, was delayed by strained relations between India and Pakistan. The 56-in pipeline is expected to handle 150 million cubic metres (5.2 billion cubic feet) of gas per day.
The pipeline is proposed to start from Assaluyeh, a port city in southern Iranian province of Bushehr, stretching over 1,100 km in Iran itself. In Pakistan, it will pass 800 km through Baluchistan and Sindh provinces. India and Pakistan will sign separate gas purchase agreements with Iran and will take deliveries of gas at Iran-Pakistan border. India will separately enter into an agreement with Pakistan for transporting gas through its territory. The pipeline will be laid in the three nations separately. The pipeline will be capable of pumping up to 60 billion cubic metres per year of gas. Half of the gas pumped through the link would go to Pakistan, and half to India, and volumes might eventually rise to 150 bcm per year.
