Project Profile

Value: US$5-US$6 billion
Location: Eastern Saudi Arabia
Start-up Year: 2014

Shaybah Field:

A super-giant field discovered in the early 1970s, with light/sweet oil in place having been estimated at about 14.3 bn, including 7 bn barrels recoverable, plus 25 TCF of gas - Shaybah came on stream in mid-1998 for tests. Its capacity reached 500,000 b/d in early 1999 and it was inaugurated in March 1999. Having undergone several expansion projects, Shaybah is now producing around 1.2 million bpd.

A group of Jacobs Engineering with SNC Lavalin and the local Saudi Consulting Services (SaudConsult) carried out the FEED package on the expansion of Shaybah. The Shaybah expansion involved installation of new wet crude handling facilities, dehydration and desalter units, a GOSP, pipelines and gas reinjection facilities. The total project cost - US$5,000m.

NGL Plant

Saudi Aramco’s Shaybah project includes development of a plant with six natural gas liquid (NGL) recovery trains capable of processing up to 7.2 billion cubic feet a day (bcf/d). The project will see Aramco separate NGL produced at the Shaybah field.

There are six projects, the largest three projects are to be carried out by international contractors. The four main projects cover the installation of a new NGL recovery facility, the debottlenecking of existing gas-oil separation facilities, the installation of new facilities at Berri, and the construction of a cogeneration power plant.

The plant will be built in four phases.

Phase I - construction of two NGL trains with capacity to process 2.4 bcf/d of gas.
Phase II - construction of one NGL train with capacity to process 1.2 bcf/d of gas.
Phase III - construction of two NGL trains with capacity to process 2.4 bcf/d of gas.
Phase IV - construction of one NGL train with capacity to process 1.2 bcf/d of gas.
