Project Profile
Value: US$15,000 million
Location: South Rumaila, Iraq
Area: 1,800 sq km
Reserves: 17 billion barrels of oil
Current production: 1.3 million bpd
Target production: 2.1 million bpd
Discovery Year: 1953
Start-up Year: 2015
The South Rumaila field is classed as a super giant with an estimated 17 billion barrels of reserves. BP/CNPC has pledged to raise to 2.85 million bpd within seven years. The current installations on the field are not capable of coping with the new oil wells scheduled to be drilled to increase production. There will be four crude oil processing plants, which will be installed to raise the fields capacity by 300,000 bpd. On completion, The Rumaila field will become the world’s second largest producing oil field, contributing approximately 10% of Middle East production, 7% of OPEC production and 3% of global production.
The development will include 3-D seismic and geographical surveys, drill 20 production and 10 injection wells, rehabilitate 130 wells, design and build two water reinjection plants, and revamp or build additional field and gathering and processing facilities. The southern Rumaila oil field, which accounts for 40% of Iraq’s 2.5 million bpd output, has been in steady decline because of chronic water incursion.
In 2011, FEED work commenced on the Produced Water Re-Injection (PWRI) Project Phase 1. PWRI consists of Cluster Pump Stations and an Integrated Processing Complex (IPC). The IPC package includes CPF for oil, gas and condensate, water separation and two water treatment facilities (North and South). The delivery of the IPC package requires new process vessels: 10 desalters, 10 dehydrators and 20 degassers.
