Project Profile

Estimated Value: US$5.5 billion
Location: Ras Laffan, Qatar
Start-up Year: 2018
Capacity: 146,000 b/d

With the Ras Laffan refinery expansion project , Qatargas seeks to increase the capacity of its Ras Laffan refinery condensate facility from 146,000-b/d to 292,000 b/d. The project is part of an effort to keep up with the rising volumes of condensate from the ongoing development of the North field.

The company is also looking to include an aromatics plant, a gas oil hydrotreater and splitter to divide heavy and light naphtha. QP subsidiaries Qatar Liquefied Gas Company (Qatargas) and Ras Laffan Liquefied Natural Gas Company (RasGas) will run the refinery and provide the bulk of condensate feedstock respectively.

The facility will process condensate to produce five products support the energy and industry sectors by providing energy sources and raw feedstock material, namely naphtha, kerojet (A-1), diesel and liquefied petroleum gas in the form of propane and butane.

In addition, the facility includes a waste water recycling facility which treats industrial water from Laffan Refinery 1 and Laffan Refinery 2. The recycled water is then re-used as boiler feed water and cooling water, thereby reducing water consumption and eliminating the discharge of treated industrial water.
