Swedish port of Oxelösund is planning to start building a small-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal by 2020. The facility, to be built in two stages would supply natural gas via a pipeline to the compatriot steel company SSAB. The first stage of development to be completed in 2020 through 2023 would include the construction of a 500 cubic metre storage tank and a natural gas pipeline to SSAB that is looking to replace oil as fuel. The facility would also have bunkering capabilities, either from by a truck-to-ship method or via a mobile bunkering unit.
The second stage at the terminal would be developed in case of an increased demand for liquefied natural gas. This stage of construction would include a larger storage tank, a dedicated LNG bunkering facility for vessels, as well as LNG truck loading facilities as well as railway connection. The port would consider building a 30,000-cbm storage tank or several storage tanks with lower capacity. The second stage planned for commissioning by 2023 would increase the terminal’s handling capacity from 9100 tonnes per year to 500,000 tonnes per year. The port is currently looking to secure the environmental permit for the facility with public consultation on the project to be held on November 29, 2017.
